ANDREA ÖSTLUND

With nearly 30 years of experience, Andrea Östlund is a well-known director and screenwriter. Her background in the theater is probably one secret to her phenomenal way of working with actors and understanding the magic aspect of creating both great intense scenes, as she did with "30 degrees in February" and "Vår tid är nu," just to name two of Andrea's long list of directing success series.

Driven by the tragicomic aspects of human life, psychological credibility, and representation, Andrea always maintains a level of urgency in her work and is known for prioritizing acting and actors, as well as her loving depiction of human shortcomings seen through complex perspectives.

She moves gracefully between genres, themes, and productions, using her specific enthusiasm for the story, the people, the art, and the craftsmanship. Andrea believes that it's the details that carry the wholeness, which is one of the things she teaches in her pop-up workshops for film students as a senior lecturer in film directing at Valand, and what makes a great presence in workshops for theater students.

Andrea was also the force behind the iconic project "Rookie" that gave birth to movies like "Apflickorna." Without her eye and her groundbreaking idea to quote women as a pioneer and commissioning editor, many great films wouldn't be here today.

Early 2024 Andrea directed a live-produced immersive film experience with five projectors, “Fragile Hope” together with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra. The show will be shown world wide and premiere in London in The Royal Festival Hall the fall of 2024.

Andrea is currently developing a feature film with Zentropa Sweden, a comedy series with Klara Zimmegren and is studying conceptual theatre directing. She has also been involved in the Danish feature ”The Bastard" by Nikolaj Arcel as assistant director.
