NIKI LINDROTH VON BAHR
NIKI LINDROTH VON BAHR, born 1984 in Stockholm, is an artist, writer, director and filmmaker focused on stop motion animation.
Niki has made five films to date; TORD AND TORD, BATH HOUSE, THE BURDEN, SOMETHING TO REMEMBER and THE HOUSE. Her latest project formed part of the animated anthology called THE HOUSE for Netflix, which was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Single Drama in 2023. Niki’s contributing film to THE HOUSE was starring rats and fur singers in a story about today’s overheated housing market. She developed the idea, again with a thriller tone, together with Johannes Nyholm. The lead voice is provided by Pulp singer Jarvis Cocker with memorable supporting roles by Yvonne Lombard and Sven Wollter.
In recent years she has had several solo exhibitions, such as Les Fables Du Niki Lindroth von Bahr at Institute Suedois in Paris 2022. Her exhibition "Something to remember" at Färgfabriken in Stockholm 2019 became the gallery's most visited ever.
Niki's films have been shown and awarded at festivals worldwide, such as Cannes, Berlinale, Toronto and Sundance. Since its premiere in 2017, The Burden has received no less than 85 awards, including Le Cristal for Best Short Film in Annecy, Best International Short Film in Toronto and Guldbaggen for Best Short Film 2018. In 2019, she was named in Variety magazine as one of "10 Animators to Watch for". Niki is a also a member of The Oscar Academy.
In addition to Niki's film and art projects, she is a Costume Designer and has worked with artists such as Fever Ray and David Bowie. She has taught animation and modeling at CalArts in Los Angeles and Tokyo University of Art, Film and New Media, Konstfack, Mejan and SKH.
Niki is currently developing a new film called AIRPORT (working title) drawing inspiration from both Dante’s Divine Comedy and Greek mythology, as well the film version of The Tales of Beatrix Potter, which she watched every Christmas as a child.
Apart from that, Niki is also developing ideas in the long format, one feature film and one tv series. The tv series is developed and written together with screenwriter Jen Silverman, who previously worked as a screenwriter for tv series HBO’s TOKYO VICE and Netflix’s TALES OF THE CITY, and the upcoming feature film I AM CYBIL (starring Elle Fanning and Sarah Paulson).
There is currently a documentary about Niki Lindroth von Bahr’s work on SVT, called “Miniatyrmakaren/The Miniatyrist – A film about Niki Lindroth von Bahr” (2024) made by Joanna Karlberg och Tove Palén.
