A woman is found badly cut in a stairwell on Gamla Väster in Malmö. She is dismissed as psychotic and no criminal investigation is launched. Kattis Olsson, a psychologist and profiler at the police's special group for serious offences, senses that something is not right. Against the wishes of her boss, Truls Reimer, she begins to investigate the matter on her own. At the same time, Truls urges his colleagues to take up an old case of a woman found dead in the canal in Malmö twenty years earlier. But when another woman alerts the police that she has woken up in her home with a cut across her back, he is forced to admit his mistake.

While Kattis is forced to deal with Trul's narcissistic leadership style, the investigation, called The Night Animal, also becomes a journey into her own dark past. What begins in the Old West neighbourhood leads the task force into the innermost circles of an ancient secret society. But the road there will prove to be deadly for Kattis.

A well-known Malmö personality is found murdered in the lift of a newly built apartment block in the West Harbour. He has a strange burn over his mouth. Martin ‘Gulte’ Guldström from the Malmö police's special group for serious crimes is one of the first on the scene, and what initially appears to be a derailed conflict between two neighbours soon turns out to be something much bigger.

At the Stockholm police department's serious crime unit, Truls Reimer tops the statistics for solved cases, but his gruff attitude is not appreciated by everyone. When the complaints become too many, he is offered a transfer to Malmö, and his boss makes it clear that turning it down is not an option.

Psychologist Kattis Olsson has shelved her job as a profiler. She now works at a counselling clinic and is trying to cope with life as a single mother. But when she is asked to step into her old role and help the police call in the perpetrator who is branding men in Malmö, she can't resist the offer. However, Kattis soon realises that she needs to run a parallel investigation without informing her new boss. A decision that could have disastrous consequences if it turns out to be wrong.
