The year is 1940, and the lives of three young women are changed forever when they are selected by the Swedish government to crack a Nazi code through signal reconnaissance. As the threat from Nazi Germany grows stronger, three women with contrasting backgrounds are brought together by both circumstance and the merit of their abilities. Signe, who refuses to marry her sister’s widower, Iris, who has fled with her two sons from occupied Estonia, and Elisabeth, newly resigned from her job for having questioned the leadership of her male superiors. Together, they work tirelessly to aid the Allies in their fight against tyranny and to maintain the security of the kingdom, all whilst navigating a male-dominated environment as women of their time.
A SECOND ALLIANCE
In the eagerly awaited sequel to THE FIRST CIPHER, Rudberg revisits the life of Elisabeth, Iris, and Signe, who, at the height of the Second World War, attempt to break the German code.
Nazi Germany has grown stronger, and on Midsummer’s Eve in the summer of 1941, the Germans invade Russia under the code name Operation Barbarossa.

The summer of 1941 is uncommonly hot. By the docks, Stockholm city dwellers sunbathe in rowing boats as prime minister Per Albin Hansson delivers his historic speech to the nation, proclaiming Swedish neutrality in the Second World War. In the meantime, in a cramped office in the middle of the city, three female code breakers are working tirelessly to decode war messages.
In the third book about the lives of female code breakers Elisabeth, Signe and Iris, wedding bells are soon to chime between Elisabeth and her beau Dinty, but tensions rise when Elisabeth is asked to contact her former lover in order to keep the nation safe. Signe spends her time in the Stockholm archipelago at the summer house of Professor Svartström, and Iris is asked to do work for the Swedish Military Heritage Association. But when an alarming letter arrives from Iris’ sister in Estonia, and the strange context of Iris’ escape to Sweden comes to light, the women are soon drawn into a plot that requires them at their best to untangle who to trust in the chaos of a world war.

The pressure on Sweden and the friends at Karlaplan 4 is immense. Goebbles talks about neutral publicity and Sweden crouches so as not to end up being the next country on the attack-list. In addition to the external press, small fires are also beginning to burn in the relationships’ at home in Stockholm.
Iris is in a foxhole, sandwiched between her sister with Nazi sympathies and her sons' Jewish heritage. Elisabeth begins to realize that the freedom she thought she would gain through marriage could not, in fact, be more distant. For Signe, life is turned upside down when a sudden death changes the conditions on the family farm she thought she had left behind forever.
THE FOURTH DOCTRINE is the fourth part in Denise Rudberg's historical novel series. Elisabeth, Signe and Iris are based on the author's own family and depict Sweden during World War II.
REVIEWS
‘Denise Rudberg’s depiction of Sweden during WW2 in her series THE CODE BREAKERS becomes more and more interesting. It started as a story about the evolvement of women’s rights, with three women coming together during the war in their task of breaking codes from foreign nations. Now, the perspective is widened with not only depictions of war, but also societal issues.’
